Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tinospora cordifolia, also known as guduchi or amrita, is a climbing shrub widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, primarily in India. It contains various bioactive compounds—glycosides, diterpenoid lactones, alkaloids, phenolics, essential oils, polysaccharides, and tinosporaside—which are believed to contribute to its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antidiabetic, and hypolipidemic effects. Its principal mechanisms include modulation of immune function and inhibition of oxidative stress through free radical scavenging. Modern clinical evidence for its efficacy remains limited, with the most robust data supporting effects on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes. It is available in standardized extracts and marketed as dietary supplements, but there is no substantial regulatory approval for pharmaceutical indications outside of traditional medicine systems[1][2][3][4][5].
