Overview

Tiotropium is a long-acting antimuscarinic bronchodilator used primarily for the maintenance treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, as well as for asthma in some patients[1][2][3][4][5]. It works by antagonizing muscarinic acetylcholine receptors—mainly the M3 subtype—in airway smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of bronchial muscles and sustained bronchodilation[3]. Tiotropium is administered via inhalation and provides 24-hour symptom control. It was developed by Boehringer Ingelheim and received FDA approval in 2004[3].
