Overview

Tipranavir is a nonpeptidic, sulfonamide-containing small molecule that acts as an HIV-1 protease inhibitor. It is used in combination with ritonavir and other antiretroviral agents to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in adults and children weighing at least 36 kg who have received prior HIV treatment and are resistant to multiple protease inhibitors. Tipranavir works by inhibiting the processing of viral Gag and Gag-Pol polyproteins, thereby preventing the formation of mature infectious virions. Its unique structure allows it to remain effective against strains of HIV that are resistant to other protease inhibitors, making it particularly useful for salvage therapy in patients with drug-resistant HIV. The drug was developed and manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim under the brand name Aptivus[3][5][6].
