Overview

Tirofiban is a non-peptide selective glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitor that reversibly inhibits fibrinogen-dependent platelet aggregation and subsequent formation of thrombi. It is primarily used to prevent blood clots from forming in the arteries of the heart after certain types of chest pain and heart attacks. It may also be used in patients who are having certain heart and blood vessel procedures, particularly in non-ST elevated acute coronary syndrome. Tirofiban has a rapid onset and short duration of action after proper IV administration, with coagulation parameters returning to normal 4 to 8 hours after the drug is withdrawn. It is a synthetic, non-peptide inhibitor derived from a molecule found in the venom of the saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus).
