Overview

Tirzepatide is a synthetic peptide drug administered as a once-weekly subcutaneous injection. It acts as a dual agonist of the glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor and the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor, mimicking the action of these natural incretin hormones. By activating both receptors, tirzepatide increases insulin secretion, suppresses appetite, slows gastric emptying, and enhances satiety. It is approved for use in adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control (as Mounjaro), for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related comorbidity (as Zepbound), and for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in patients with obesity. Tirzepatide has demonstrated superior efficacy in glycemic control and weight loss compared to selective GLP-1 receptor agonists[1][2][4][5][7].
