Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tisseel is a fibrin sealant used as a topical hemostatic agent and surgical tissue adhesive. It contains two main active components—human fibrinogen and human thrombin—which, when mixed at the time of application, mimic the final step of the coagulation cascade to form a stable fibrin clot. This clot adheres to tissue surfaces, achieving hemostasis (control of bleeding) and sealing tissues. The formulation also includes synthetic aprotinin to increase resistance of the clot to degradation in environments with high fibrinolytic activity. Tisseel is indicated for use as an adjunct to hemostasis in adult and pediatric patients (>1 month old) undergoing surgery when conventional techniques are ineffective or impractical, including in patients on anticoagulation therapy. It is also indicated for sealing colonic anastomoses following reversal of temporary colostomies[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. Developed by Baxter Healthcare, it has been approved since 1998.
