Drug intelligence / Profile preview
TISSEEL Lyo is a fibrin sealant developed by Baxter Healthcare Corporation, designed as an adjunct to hemostasis during surgical procedures. It is a two-component biologic product composed of pooled human plasma-derived proteins. The first component contains human fibrinogen and synthetic aprotinin (a fibrinolysis inhibitor), while the second component contains human thrombin and calcium chloride. When mixed, thrombin converts fibrinogen into fibrin, mimicking the final stage of the natural blood coagulation cascade to form a stable, adherent clot. This mechanism allows for effective bleeding control even in heparinized patients or those on antiplatelet therapy. It is specifically indicated for use in adult and pediatric patients when conventional surgical techniques are ineffective or impractical, including in vascular surgery involving prosthetic expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) conduits.
