TMSX (7-methyl-8-(3-isopropoxypropyl)-1,3-dimethylxanthine) is a potent and highly selective antagonist of the adenosine A2A receptor. It is primarily utilized as a radiopharmaceutical in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, typically radiolabeled with Carbon-11 ([11C]TMSX). This tracer allows for the non-invasive, in vivo quantification of A2A receptor density and availability in the brain, which is of significant interest in the study of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. In Parkinson's disease research, [11C]TMSX is used to investigate the upregulation of A2A receptors in the striatum and their association with motor complications and gray matter atrophy. The compound was originally developed and characterized by researchers at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS) in Japan.
