Overview

Tobacco refers to the leaves of plants from the genus Nicotiana—primarily Nicotiana tabacum and Nicotiana rustica—which contain nicotine as their main psychoactive component. Tobacco is consumed in various forms including smoking (cigarettes, cigars, pipes), chewing (chewing tobacco), sniffing (snuff), and use in water pipes such as hookahs[1][2][7]. The primary mechanism of action is through nicotine—a stimulant and highly addictive alkaloid—which acts on nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the brain. This leads to both stimulant and depressant effects by increasing neurotransmitter release and activating reward pathways[1][5]. While nicotine drives addiction to tobacco products[3], it is the thousands of chemicals produced during combustion—including carcinogens like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nitrosamines—that are responsible for most health harms such as cancer and chronic lung disease[3][8]. Tobacco use remains a leading cause of preventable death worldwide.
