Drug intelligence / Profile preview
TobraDex is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic preparation containing the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin and the potent corticosteroid dexamethasone. It is indicated for steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where a risk of superficial bacterial ocular infection exists, such as following cataract surgery (phacoemulsification). Tobramycin provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and causing bacterial cell death. Dexamethasone acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist to suppress the inflammatory response, reducing edema, capillary dilatation, and leukocyte migration. In the clinical trial context provided, TobraDex served as the standard postoperative medication regimen (administered four times daily, or quid) to manage inflammation and prevent infection following intraocular lens implantation.
