Overview
Tobradex AF is an ophthalmic suspension developed by Alcon, featuring an advanced formulation of the fixed-dose combination of the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin (0.3%) and the corticosteroid dexamethasone (0.1%). It is primarily indicated for the treatment of steroid-responsive inflammatory ocular conditions where a risk of superficial bacterial infection exists, such as following cataract surgery. Tobramycin provides broad-spectrum bactericidal activity by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Dexamethasone is a potent glucocorticoid that reduces inflammation by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, thereby inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and suppressing the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. The AF (Advanced Formulation) designation typically indicates a modified vehicle intended to optimize the suspension's stability and improve the ocular bioavailability of the active ingredients compared to standard formulations.
