Overview

Tobramens Plus is an ophthalmic combination drug containing the aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin and the synthetic corticosteroid dexamethasone. Developed by SPEY, it is approved for the prophylaxis and treatment of ocular inflammation and the prevention of bacterial infection, particularly following cataract surgery. Tobramycin exerts bactericidal activity by binding to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and causing bacterial cell death. Dexamethasone acts as an agonist of the glucocorticoid receptor, suppressing the inflammatory response by reducing capillary permeability, vasodilation, and leukocyte migration. Tobramens Plus is available as ophthalmic drops (suspension) and ophthalmic ointment.
