Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from the bacterium *Streptomyces tenebrarius*. It functions as a potent bactericidal agent by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Its primary mechanism involves binding irreversibly to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, which disrupts the normal process of protein translation. This interference leads to the misreading of messenger RNA (mRNA) codons and the production of aberrant, non-functional proteins, ultimately resulting in bacterial cell death. Tobramycin is effective against a range of Gram-negative bacteria, notably *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*, and certain Gram-positive bacteria like *Staphylococcus aureus*. It is utilized in the treatment of various serious bacterial infections, including sepsis, meningitis, lower respiratory tract infections (particularly in cystic fibrosis patients), intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, complicated urinary tract infections, and superficial eye infections. It can be administered via intravenous, intramuscular, inhalation, or ophthalmic routes.
