Overview

RSP-1502 is an inhaled combination drug consisting of tobramycin (an aminoglycoside antibiotic) and sodium calcium edetate (calcium EDTA), developed as a novel treatment for respiratory infections in people with cystic fibrosis. The drug acts as an "antibiotic booster," aiming to enhance the effectiveness of standard antibiotic therapy against chronic lung infections caused by *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. The mechanism involves both inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis via the 30S ribosomal subunit (tobramycin) and chelation of divalent cations that can disrupt biofilms or bacterial defenses (calcium EDTA). Early clinical trials have shown significant reductions in bacterial load and improvements in lung function compared to standard care. RSP-1502 is being developed by Respirion Pharmaceuticals, a spin-out from Telethon Kids Institute and Perth Children's Hospital, with support from Brandon Capital and the US Cystic Fibrosis Foundation[1][3][4][5].
