Overview

Tocilizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that acts as an interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor inhibitor. It binds specifically to both soluble and membrane-bound IL-6 receptors (sIL-6R and mIL-6R), thereby inhibiting IL-6-mediated signaling. IL-6 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine involved in immune response regulation and inflammation. By blocking the action of IL-6, tocilizumab reduces inflammation associated with autoimmune diseases. Tocilizumab was developed by Chugai (a subsidiary of Roche) and is primarily indicated for moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, giant cell arteritis, polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD), cytokine release syndrome following CAR-T therapy, and COVID-19 in hospitalized adults requiring supplemental oxygen or mechanical ventilation.
