Overview

Tolazamide is an oral antidiabetic drug of the sulfonylurea class used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works primarily by stimulating pancreatic beta cells to release more insulin into the bloodstream in patients with functioning pancreatic islets. This effect helps lower blood glucose levels in people whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet alone. Over time and with chronic administration in type II diabetic patients, tolazamide’s glucose-lowering effect persists even as the insulin secretory response may decline; extrapancreatic effects may also contribute to its action. It is not effective for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis and should not be used as sole therapy for these conditions[1][2][6]. The drug has been discontinued in some markets (including the United States)[3][7].
