toloxatone

Toloxatone is an antidepressant that was first launched in France in 1984 for the treatment of depression. It acts as a selective and reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), an enzyme responsible for breaking down monoamine neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. By inhibiting MAO-A, toloxatone increases the levels of these neurotransmitters in the brain, which helps alleviate symptoms of depression. Its reversible inhibition provides a more favorable side effect profile compared to traditional irreversible MAO inhibitors and reduces dietary and drug interaction risks.
