Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tongfeng Pill is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital preparation developed by the Affiliated Hospital of Changchun University of Chinese Medicine for the treatment of acute gouty arthritis. The formulation is designed to address the TCM patterns of damp-heat and blood stasis typically associated with gout flares. It comprises several herbal components, including *Rhizoma Dioscoreae Septemlobae* (Dioscorea septemloba), *Radix Clematidis* (Clematis chinensis), and *Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae* (Smilax glabra). Pharmacologically, Tongfeng Pill exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and urate-lowering properties. It works by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), which are central to the inflammatory response triggered by monosodium urate crystals. Additionally, constituent herbs may inhibit xanthine oxidase activity and enhance renal uric acid excretion, thereby reducing serum uric acid levels.
