Tongfu Xiefei Formula

Tongfu Xiefei Formula (also known as the Formula of Purging Intestine and Draining Lung) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal combination developed for the treatment of acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The formula is based on the TCM principle of "treating the lung through the intestine" (肺病治肠), which posits a functional and pathological connection between the lung and the large intestine (the gut-lung axis). It is designed to clear heat, resolve toxins, and promote bowel movements ("purging the intestine") to alleviate pulmonary inflammation, reduce edema, and improve respiratory function ("draining the lung"). Clinical research, including trials sponsored by the Secondary Hospital Affiliated to Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has investigated its role in modulating systemic inflammatory responses and transforming "Large Intestine Syndrome" in critically ill patients.
