Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tonghua Liyan (THLY) is a proprietary traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation available as granules or decoction. It is composed of 11 botanical drugs, 2 animal-derived ingredients, and 1 mineral drug. The formula combines four classic TCM prescriptions—Xuanfu Daizhe Decoction, Banxia Houpu Decoction, Gancao Jiegeng Shegan Decoction, and Zuojin Wan—and is used primarily for the treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPRD), especially in patients with stagnation of phlegm and qi syndrome (SPQS). Mechanistically, its components are reported to reduce throat inflammation by modulating inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β; inhibit gastric acid secretion; regulate esophageal mucosal inflammation; suppress vagal nerve reflexes; and influence pathways including EGFR signaling and arachidonic acid metabolism. Clinical studies suggest that when combined with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), THLY improves symptoms more effectively than PPIs alone in LPRD patients[1][2][3].
