Tongjing Plaster

Tongjing Plaster is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) topical formulation developed by Yueyang Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, affiliated with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is specifically indicated for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea, particularly for patients presenting with the cold-dampness stagnation or qi stagnation and blood stasis patterns in TCM theory. The plaster is applied topically to the Shenque (umbilicus) acupuncture point, allowing for the transdermal absorption of active herbal constituents such as *Corydalis yanhusuo* and *Angelica sinensis*. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of prostaglandin levels—specifically decreasing Prostaglandin F2-alpha (PGF2α) and increasing Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)—which leads to reduced uterine smooth muscle contraction and improved pelvic microcirculation. Clinical studies, including Phase 3 trials, have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing pain intensity as measured by Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores and improving uterine artery hemodynamics.
