Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tongluo Huatan Decoction is a traditional Chinese herbal formula used primarily in the management of post-stroke sequelae and ischemic stroke. It is composed of multiple herbs with properties such as phlegm-resolving, blood circulation-promoting, and activating collaterals. Common ingredients include Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), Acorus tatarinowii (Shichangpu), Gastrodia elata (Tianma), Atractylodes macrocephala (Baishu), Pinellia ternata (Banxia), Poria cocos (Fuling), Cyperus rotundus (Xiangfu), Rheum palmatum or Radix Rhei Et Rhizome (Dahuang/Jiudahuang), Arisaema heterophyllum Blume (Dannanxing/Bile arisaema), and Bambusa textilis McClure (Tianzhuhuang). The decoction acts by removing dampness and phlegm, promoting blood circulation, clearing collaterals, breaking stasis, and supporting neuroregeneration. Mechanistically it may modulate vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 expression and influence inflammatory pathways relevant to neurological recovery[2][3][6][8]. It has also been studied for rheumatoid arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory effects[5].
