Tongluo Zhitong formula is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formulation developed by the Tianjin Jizhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital for the topical treatment of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). The formula is designed to address synovial hyperplasia, a key pathological feature of the disease, by inhibiting the proliferation of synovial fibroblasts. Research indicates that the formula exerts its therapeutic effects through cell cycle regulation, specifically by inhibiting DNA replication during the S phase and arresting cells in the G2/M phase. This concentration-dependent inhibitory effect helps mitigate joint inflammation and improve function.
