Overview
Tongqiaohuoxue decoction (THD) is a classical Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula first recorded in the Qing Dynasty text *Yi Lin Gai Cuo* (Corrections on the Errors among Physicians). It is traditionally used to "open the orifices" and "invigorate blood circulation," primarily for treating conditions related to blood stasis in the head and face, such as headaches, hair loss, and cerebrovascular disorders. Modern research indicates that THD possesses anti-inflammatory, anti-atherosclerotic, and neuroprotective properties. It has been shown to reduce lipid deposition, inhibit endothelial cell activation by lowering levels of ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and MCP-1, and decrease amyloid-beta plaque formation in Alzheimer's disease models. The decoction typically consists of eight ingredients: *Prunus persica* (peach seed), *Carthamus tinctorius* (safflower), *Ligusticum chuanxiong*, *Paeonia lactiflora* (red peony root), *Ziziphus jujuba* (jujube), *Zingiber officinale* (ginger), *Allium fistulosum* (scallion), and *Moschus* (musk).
