Tongru Dan (通乳丹) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulation used primarily for the treatment of postpartum hypogalactia (insufficient lactation). It is typically administered orally and often prescribed as part of routine postpartum care to promote milk production in women experiencing low breast milk supply. The formula is based on TCM principles that attribute insufficient lactation to deficiencies in qi and blood, as well as liver qi stagnation. Common herbal components include Astragalus membranaceus (Huangqi), Codonopsis pilosula (Dangshen), Vaccaria segetalis seed (Wangbuliuxing), Platycodon grandiflorum root (Jiegeng), Angelica sinensis root (Danggui), Bupleurum chinense root (Chaihu), Ophiopogon japonicus tuber (Maidong), Akebia caulis stem pith (Tongcao), and Glycyrrhiza uralensis root processed with honey ("Zhi Gancao"). These herbs are believed to work synergistically to tonify qi, nourish blood, soothe the liver, promote circulation, and facilitate lactation. Some formulations may contain animal-derived ingredients such as pangolin scales; however, their use is now highly regulated or prohibited due to conservation concerns[1][3].
