Tongxie Yaofang (TXYF) is a classic Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formula first documented in the 'Danxi Xinfa' during the Yuan Dynasty. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D), which is characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea triggered by emotional stress or dietary factors. The formula typically consists of four medicinal herbs: Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu), Paeonia lactiflora (Baishao), Citrus reticulata (Chenpi), and Saposhnikovia divaricata (Fangfeng). Its therapeutic mechanism involves the regulation of gastrointestinal motility, reduction of visceral hypersensitivity, and modulation of the gut-brain axis.
