Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tongxieyaofang (TXYF) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula originating from the Yuan dynasty and first recorded in “Danxi’s Experiential Therapy” in the 14th century. It is composed of four main herbs—Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (BaiZhu), Radix Paeoniae Alba (BaiShao), Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (ChenPi), and Radix Saposhnikoviae (FangFeng)—in a typical ratio of 3:2:1.5:1[4][9]. The formula is primarily used to treat diarrhea associated with liver stagnation and spleen deficiency, as well as abdominal pain due to disharmony between the liver and spleen[1][4]. According to TCM theory, it soothes the liver, strengthens the spleen, regulates Qi flow, transforms dampness, relieves spasms and pain, and stops diarrhea[2][4]. Modern research supports its use for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea predominance (IBS-D) and ulcerative colitis; studies indicate anti-inflammatory effects, immunomodulation, regulation of gastrointestinal motility and mucosal repair[1][5][10]. Mechanistically it may modulate gut-brain axis signaling pathways as well as intestinal flora composition[10].
