Tonogenchoncel-L (formerly known as TG-C or Invossa) is an allogeneic cell and gene therapy developed by Kolon TissueGene for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. It consists of a 3:1 mixture of primary human chondrocytes and irradiated human cells (originally identified as chondrocytes but later confirmed to be GP2.293 kidney-derived cells) that have been genetically modified using a retroviral vector to express Transforming Growth Factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). Administered as a single intra-articular injection, the therapy is designed to modulate the inflammatory environment within the osteoarthritic joint. The localized expression of TGF-β1 aims to reduce pain, improve physical function, and potentially promote the synthesis of extracellular matrix components to slow joint degeneration. While the drug was briefly approved in South Korea, its license was revoked in 2019 due to the cell line misidentification; however, clinical development has continued in the United States under Phase 3 trials.
