Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This investigational treatment is a topical ointment containing 1% atorvastatin calcium salt, developed by researchers at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. While atorvastatin is a well-known HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) typically administered orally for cardiovascular conditions and hypercholesterolemia, this specific formulation is designed for topical application to treat non-segmental vitiligo. The drug is hypothesized to work by modulating immunological pathways and reversing the autoimmune pathogenesis that leads to skin depigmentation. It was evaluated for its ability to induce repigmentation in the EVRAAS pilot study (NCT03247400), where it was compared against a topical simvastatin formulation.
