Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Topical gemcitabine is an investigational drug delivery approach developed by the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota for the treatment of gynecologic malignancies, including cervical, endometrial, and ovarian cancers. This approach utilizes a specialized cervical delivery device called CerviPrep to apply gemcitabine hydrochloride directly to the cervix. Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog and small molecule chemotherapeutic that acts as a radiosensitizer by inhibiting DNA synthesis through incorporation into DNA and inhibition of ribonucleotide reductase. The localized delivery aims to achieve high drug concentrations in target tissues while minimizing the systemic toxicities typically associated with intravenous administration of radiosensitizing agents during chemoradiation therapy.
