Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Topical metformin 30% cream is an experimental dermatological formulation of the biguanide antihyperglycemic agent metformin, currently being investigated by Sohag University for the treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis. While traditionally administered orally for type 2 diabetes, metformin exhibits significant anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, and anti-angiogenic properties when applied topically. Its mechanism in psoriasis involves the suppression of keratinocyte proliferation through the inhibition of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, specifically Interleukin-17 (IL-17). The 30% cream formulation is designed to deliver the drug directly to psoriatic lesions, potentially offering a localized therapeutic effect with minimal systemic side effects compared to traditional systemic treatments or topical corticosteroids like betamethasone valerate.
