Overview

Torasemide (also known as torsemide and 托拉塞米 in Chinese) is a potent loop diuretic of the pyridine-sulfonylurea class. It is primarily used to treat edema associated with heart failure, kidney disease, and liver cirrhosis. Torasemide can also be used for hypertension but is less preferred for this indication. Its mechanism involves inhibition of sodium and chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle by blocking the Na+-K+-2Cl− cotransporter. This leads to increased excretion of sodium, chloride, and water in urine. Torasemide also exhibits anti-mineralocorticoid effects by inhibiting aldosterone secretion and action at renal tubular cells. Compared to furosemide (another loop diuretic), it has a longer duration of action and may result in less potassium loss[1][5][7]. It is available as an oral tablet or intravenous injection for humans; veterinary formulations exist for dogs with heart failure[1][8].
