Toraymyxin is an extracorporeal hemoperfusion device designed to remove circulating endotoxin from the blood in patients with sepsis or septic shock caused by suspected Gram-negative bacterial infection or endotoxemia. The device consists of a cartridge containing polystyrene derivative fibers covalently bonded with polymyxin B, an antibiotic known for its high affinity binding and neutralization of endotoxins. Unlike systemic administration of polymyxin B—which is limited due to nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity—Toraymyxin enables selective removal of endotoxin without systemic exposure to the drug. It is indicated for use in patients who meet criteria for Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) and have evidence or suspicion of Gram-negative infection or endotoxemia. Developed by Toray Medical (a division of Toray Industries), it was first approved in Japan in 1994 and has since been used widely in emergency and intensive care settings across multiple countries[1][3][4][6].
