Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tostrelle is a transdermal gel formulation of testosterone (0.5%) specifically developed for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD), including hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in postmenopausal women. Developed by Cellegy Pharmaceuticals and later licensed to ProStrakan, the product was designed to deliver low doses of testosterone to restore physiological levels in women, thereby improving libido and sexual satisfaction. Testosterone acts as an agonist at the androgen receptor, which is a key regulator of sexual desire. The development of Tostrelle was discontinued following a non-approvable letter from the FDA in 2004, which cited the need for additional long-term safety data regarding its use in women.
