Overview

Tosylchloramide, also known as chloramine-T, is a small molecule disinfectant and mild oxidizing agent. It is a chlorinated sulfonamide compound used primarily for its antiseptic and disinfectant properties in medical, veterinary (notably aquaculture), laboratory, and industrial settings. Mechanistically, it acts as an oxidant by releasing active chlorine species that disrupt microbial cell components. It is effective against bacteria (both Gram-positive and Gram-negative), viruses, spores, algae, and parasites. In aquaculture it treats external bacterial infections in fish; in healthcare it is used for disinfection of skin or instruments; in industry it serves as a biocide or odor control agent. Tosylchloramide also finds use as a reagent in organic synthesis due to its mild oxidizing properties[1][2][3][5][8].
