Drug intelligence / Profile preview
total alkaloids of Alstonia scholaris leaf capsules is an investigational botanical drug (natural drug class 5 in China) developed by the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with the Yunnan Institute of Materia Medica. Derived from the leaves of *Alstonia scholaris* (L.) R. Br. (commonly known as the blackboard tree or "Dengtaiye" in traditional Dai medicine), this formulation is enriched with monoterpenoid indole alkaloids (such as picrinine) that exhibit anti-inflammatory, antitussive, anti-asthmatic, and expectorant properties. Preclinical studies suggest its mechanism of action involves the activation of beta-2 adrenergic receptors and the inhibition of the nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) signaling pathway, thereby reducing airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. It is currently in Phase IIb clinical development in China for the treatment of postinfectious cough (PIC) with a traditional Chinese medicine pattern of wind-heat stagnation in the lung.
