Total alkaloids of Alstonia scholaris leaves (TAAS) is a botanical drug candidate derived from the leaves of the *Alstonia scholaris* plant, commonly known as the Scholar Tree. It is being developed by the West China Hospital of Sichuan University primarily for the treatment of respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and chronic cough. The extract is a complex mixture of indole alkaloids, including scholaricine, vallesamine, and picrinine, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antitussive, and bronchodilatory properties in preclinical models. TAAS is thought to exert its therapeutic effects by inhibiting pro-inflammatory signaling pathways, such as NF-κB, and reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6. Clinical development has progressed to Phase 1 trials to evaluate its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profile in healthy volunteers.
