Overview
Tounong San is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula historically used to treat suppurative infections such as skin ulcers and carbuncles. The formula is designed to tonify Qi and Blood while promoting the discharge of pus and expelling toxins. Its classical composition includes Astragalus membranaceus (Huang Qi), Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong), Spina Gleditsiae (Zao Jiao Ci), and traditionally Pangolin scales (Chuan Shan Jia; now often substituted due to conservation concerns). Mechanistically, Tounong San supports immune function and modulates inflammation in the context of chronic non-healing sores or skin infections associated with Qi and Blood deficiency[1][2][3][4][5][8]. Experimental studies suggest it may attenuate inflammation by regulating immune responses[2][7][8].
