Tozinameran + elasomeran refers to the combination or sequential use of the two primary mRNA-based COVID-19 vaccines: Pfizer-BioNTech's Comirnaty (tozinameran) and Moderna's Spikevax (elasomeran). This combination is most frequently encountered in the context of heterologous mix-and-match vaccination regimens, where an individual receives a primary series or booster dose of one vaccine followed by the other. Both components function by delivering nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to host cells. The mRNA encodes the SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein, which is then expressed by the host's cellular machinery to elicit neutralizing antibodies and T-cell-mediated immune responses against the virus. While developed by different sponsors (Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, respectively), they share a similar mechanism of action and have been studied together in clinical trials to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of heterologous boosting.
