Drug intelligence / Profile preview
BNT162b2 + mRNA-1273 is a heterologous mRNA COVID-19 vaccine regimen consisting of two distinct nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines: tozinameran (BNT162b2; Comirnaty), developed by BioNTech and Pfizer, and elasomeran (mRNA-1273; Spikevax), developed by Moderna. Both vaccines are encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles and encode the prefusion-stabilized spike (S) glycoprotein of SARS-CoV-2. This heterologous prime-boost regimen is used to prevent COVID-19 by inducing robust neutralizing antibody and cellular (T-cell) immune responses against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Clinical and observational studies have demonstrated that heterologous schedules combining these two mRNA vaccines are highly immunogenic and effective, though they may exhibit slightly higher reactogenicity compared to homologous regimens.
