Overview

TR-290999 is a next-generation HIV fusion inhibitor peptide developed by Trimeris in collaboration with Roche. It functions by targeting the gp41 subunit of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein, thereby preventing the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane and blocking viral entry into CD4+ T cells. Designed as a successor to enfuvirtide (Fuzeon), TR-290999 was engineered to exhibit significantly higher potency and a greater genetic barrier to resistance compared to first-generation inhibitors. Although it showed promise in pre-clinical studies for the treatment of HIV-1 infection, the development of this candidate was ultimately discontinued as the partnership between Trimeris and Roche shifted focus.
