TRA-CMG-H2O2 is a targeted diagnostic contrast agent developed for the detection of cancer using Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT). It consists of gold nanorods synthesized using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a reducing agent to achieve a specific length and a distinct light absorbance spectrum in the near-infrared range (680–900 nm). To ensure stability, these gold nanorods are encapsulated in mesoporous silica and capped with chitosan (forming CMG particles). The CMGs are subsequently conjugated to the monoclonal antibody trastuzumab (TRA) to specifically target human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive cancer cells. In preclinical breast cancer models, TRA-CMG-H2O2 has demonstrated enhanced optoacoustic signals, enabling high-resolution, real-time, and spectrally distinct imaging of HER2-positive tumors.
