Overview

Trabecular meshwork mesenchymal stem cells (TM-MSCs) are a population of adult multipotent stem cells isolated from the trabecular meshwork tissue of the eye. These cells exhibit classic mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) characteristics, including the ability to adhere to plastic and differentiate into osteogenic, adipogenic, and chondrogenic lineages. In regenerative medicine research, particularly for Parkinson's disease, TM-MSCs are valued for their capacity to differentiate into dopaminergic neuron-like cells and secrete various neurotrophic factors. Their therapeutic potential lies in cell replacement and paracrine signaling, where transplanted cells may help restore dopamine levels in the striatum and provide neuroprotective support to existing neurons, thereby improving motor and cognitive symptoms associated with neurodegeneration.
