Overview
Traditional Chinese medicine 1 is a herbal prescription developed by Qianfoshan Hospital for the prevention of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with hepatitis B-related cirrhosis who have undergone transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) surgery. TIPS is a procedure used to treat portal hypertension but carries a high risk of hepatic encephalopathy due to the shunting of neurotoxic substances, such as ammonia and endotoxins, away from the liver's detoxification process. This TCM formula is designed to address the 'liver-gut axis' by enhancing the intestinal mucosal barrier and modulating the gut microbiota to reduce the production and translocation of these toxins. It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial as part of an integrated Chinese and Western medicine treatment protocol.
