Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A conventional oral tablet formulation of calcium carbonate containing 500 mg of elemental calcium, used as a control intervention in clinical research conducted by The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). This specific delivery vehicle was evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT01676636) in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to assess its preference, acceptability, and palatability compared to chewable tablets and powder formulations among pregnant women. The primary therapeutic goal of this supplementation is the prevention of preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in populations with low dietary calcium intake, consistent with World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The traditional tablet formulation demonstrated high acceptability and was the most preferred delivery vehicle in the study population.
