Overview
Tragliptin is an oral antihyperglycemic medication developed and marketed by Barakat Pharmaceutical Industries, a Syrian pharmaceutical company. It is a brand-name generic version of linagliptin, a small molecule inhibitor of the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) enzyme. By inhibiting DPP-4, Tragliptin slows the inactivation of incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). This leads to increased insulin secretion and decreased glucagon levels in a glucose-dependent manner, thereby improving glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Formulated as 5 mg tablets, Tragliptin is particularly noted for its safety profile in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, as it is primarily excreted unchanged via the bile and gut, requiring no dose adjustments.
