Overview

Tramazoline is a sympathomimetic small molecule drug used primarily as a nasal decongestant. It acts as an alpha-adrenergic receptor agonist, stimulating alpha-adrenergic receptors in the nasal mucosa to induce vasoconstriction of blood vessels. This action reduces swelling and secretion of nasal mucus, providing rapid and long-lasting relief from nasal congestion due to colds, allergies, or other respiratory conditions. Tramazoline is typically administered intranasally in the form of drops or sprays and has an onset of action within 5–10 minutes with effects lasting up to 8 hours[1][2][3][6][8]. It was patented in 1961 and introduced into medical use in 1962[1]. The drug is marketed under various brand names internationally.
