Tranexamic acid + carbazochrome sodium sulfonate is a combination hemostatic therapy primarily utilized in orthopedic surgery to manage perioperative blood loss. Tranexamic acid is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine that exerts antifibrinolytic effects by competitively inhibiting the activation of plasminogen to plasmin, thereby preventing the degradation of fibrin clots. Carbazochrome sodium sulfonate is an adrenochrome derivative that enhances capillary resistance and reduces capillary permeability, effectively controlling microvascular oozing. The combination is frequently studied and employed by the Department of Orthopedics at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, particularly in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteoarthritis or total hip arthroplasty (THA) for osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Clinical research suggests that the synergistic action of these two agents significantly reduces both visible and hidden blood loss, as well as postoperative limb swelling and inflammatory responses, compared to the use of tranexamic acid alone.
