Overview
Tranexamic acid + sucralfate is an investigational combination of two small-molecule drugs administered as a topical powder spray via endoscopy for the treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding. Developed by National Cheng Kung University Hospital, the combination leverages the antifibrinolytic properties of tranexamic acid, which inhibits fibrin degradation by binding to tissue plasminogen, and the mucosal protective properties of sucralfate, which forms a physical barrier over wound surfaces. This dual-action approach is intended to stabilize blood clots and protect the bleeding site from further irritation or degradation. Clinical evidence from pilot studies indicates that the combination significantly reduces rebleeding rates in patients with lower gastrointestinal bleeding when applied following standard endoscopic hemostasis.
