Trans sodium crocetinate (TSC) is the sodium salt of the trans-isomer of the carotenoid crocetin, classified as a small molecule drug. It acts by increasing the diffusion rate of oxygen in aqueous solutions, such as from plasma to body tissue, thereby enhancing oxygen delivery during hypoxic and ischemic conditions. This mechanism is distinct from traditional therapies and involves altering water structure in blood plasma to facilitate additional hydrogen bonding among water molecules. TSC has demonstrated potential antihypoxic and radiosensitizing activities and has been investigated for use in conditions like hemorrhagic shock, stroke (ischemic and hemorrhagic), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), vascular disorders, neurological disorders, and within tumor microenvironments. The drug is being developed primarily for intravenous administration[1][2][3][4][5][6].
